Acupunctuur stimuleert slapende netwerken

Er zijn diverse verklaringen van waarom acupunctuur werkt. De belangrijkste verklaringen zijn de neurohumorale en de embryologische verklaring, die we elkders op deze website hebben belicht. Een Amerikaans farmacoloog van de universiteit van Illinois vult die hypotheses aan met een mooie analyse van de werking van zenuwnerwerken. Hij doet dat in een tijdschrift voor nieuwe medische hypothesen (Med Hypotheses.2008 Aug 30). Hij stelt dat acupunctuur slapende, niet functionele netwerken in ons zenuwstelsel activeren. Door die activatie zijn de positieve effecten op symptomen te verklaren. We laten hem even aan het woord:

CNS neuronal networks are known to control normal physiological functions, including locomotion and respiration. Neuronal networks also mediate the pathophysiology of many CNS disorders. Stimulation therapies, including localized brain and vagus nerve stimulation, electroshock, and acupuncture, are proposed to activate "therapeutic" neuronal networks.

These therapeutic networks are dormant prior to stimulatory treatments, but when the dormant networks are activated they compete with pathophysiological neuronal networks, disrupting their function.

This competition diminishes the disease symptoms, providing effective therapy for otherwise intractable CNS disorders, including epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, chronic pain, and depression.

Die slapende netwerken worden dus door de acupunctuur geactiveerd, en gaan een competitie aan met die netwerken die verantwoordelijk zijn voor de sypmtomen van o.a. chronische pijn, depressie en andere symtomen van het zenwustelsel.

Hij werkt zijn netwerk theorie uit op basis van modern neurofysiologisch en farmacologisch inzicht:

Competition between stimulation-activated therapeutic networks and pathophysiological networks is a major mechanism mediating the therapeutic effects of stimulation. This network interaction is hypothesized to involve competition for "control" of brain regions that contain high proportions of conditional multireceptive (CMR) neurons. [1]

Een boeiende aanvulling op een biologisch hoger niveau dan de simpele neurohumorale hypothese via de endorfines en neurotransmitters. Het geeft een extra dimensie aan de verklaringen van de werking van acupunctuur via de positieve beinvloeding van de plasticiteit in het zenuwstelsel.
