Acupunctuur werkt niet tegen overgewicht
Behandeling van overgewicht met acupunctuur is zinloos. Aldus een recente meta-analyse van 31 studies naar de effecten van de naaldsteek bij patienten met obesitas. De auteurs vatten hun meta-analyse als volgt samen:Our review suggests that acupuncture is an effective treatment for obesity. However, the amount of evidence is not fully convincing because of the poor methodological quality of trials reviewed. In conclusion, there is an urgent need for well-planned, long-term studies to address the effectiveness of acupuncture for treating obesity. [1]
Op zich een beetje bizar dat ze eerst roepen dat acupunctuur niet werkt, en dan dat er meer onderzoek naar moet komen.
Obesitas is een lastige aandoening, die mono-causaal therapeutisch niet behandeld kan worden, lijkt ons. Motivatie, begeleiding, dieet, dietiste, etc, etc. In een recente andere studie bleek dat acupunctuur, toegevoegd aan dieet en beweging, ook geen zinvolle bijdrage leverde. [2]
Het zou kunnen zijn dat electro-acupunctuur wel effectief is, maar daar zijn nog te weinig studies naar gedaan. [3][4]
Stoppen met roken
Voor een verwante aandoening, roken, bestaan ook aanwijzingen dat acupunctuur en ooracupunctuur niet werken. [5] Datzelfde vinden we in een grote meta-analyse:
There is no consistent evidence that acupuncture, acupressure, laser therapy or electrostimulation are effective for smoking cessation, but methodological problems mean that no firm conclusions can be drawn. [6]
Vooralsnog dus een roodoranje stoplicht voor acupunctuur bij overgewicht. En idem voor stoppen met roken.
