Foundation IOCOB has the following goals:
  • To support innovative research and education in the field of complementary medicine,
  • To initiate all actions related to or supportive for the aforementioned goal in the broadest sense.

Foundation IOCOB strives to reach its goals in the field of complementary medicine through the following objectives:

  • To develop innovative and cost-effective research,
  • To develop and facilitate education for students of medicine and biomedical sciences,
  • To develop instruments for patients to support their choice of alternative, experimental or complementary medicine,
  • To provide governmental organizations, media and the public with reliable information,
  • To identify and evaluate new and experimental interventions.

Scientific advisors foundation IOCOB
Journalists are kindly requested foundation IOCOB to call for information about the foundation and substantive issues (030-6939022), and not our scientific advisers. The scientific advisers IOCOB only give advice based on the following. They are not representatives of IOCOB for the press!

Evidence based medicine: red alert
Is our modern medicine Evidence Based? Absolutely not! Evidence bIased should we call it! Luckily, if we do so, we can still keep the acronym EBM. Because more then half of all the medical information in the medical journals is based on fraud, we suggest to speak of Evidence BIased Medicine! Now: an analysis of the foundation IOCOB showing the relativity of medical knowledge! With the assistance of prof.dr. Ludwig von Feyermorgen!

CAM students platform
Granulla is the rural students platform that deals with the increasing of knowledge about complementary and alternative medicine at the (medical) student. The association consists of a group students who consider that a health care professional should be able to apply different modes of therapies in a professional manner to consider. Knowledge about the various therapies, the efficacy and safety of it, it is required to inform the patient adequately and be able to give advice. In their objectives and put the emphasis on encouraging a critical, open and respectful attitude to the therapies, providers and users of the treatment, connect strong with Granulla foundation IOCOB.

Geraniumroot extract (Pelargonium sidoides) in bronchitis and flu

A Geranium species, Pelargonium (Pelargonium sidoides) is used in South Africa as a natural antibiotic. Its name is ‘Umckaloabo’, and it has been used for centuries by the Zulu, Basuto, Xhosa and Mfenfi tribes. It seems to be especially valued for its action on upper respiratory tract infections, coughs and ear, nose and throat infections as well for its ability to support rapid recovery from bronchitis, colds and flu.

In 1897 Charles Stevens, an Englishman, was treated with this geranium to cure him from tuberculosis. Fully recovered, he took this remedy to Europe and the herb gained in popularity since than.

To date an impressive number of studies of Geraniumroot extract (Pelargonium sidoides) have been published so far. One, from Bulgaria, tested Geranium extract in the laboratory and documented its anti-viral activity. Another study, from Germany, published in the Journal of Family Practice in March 2004, found that Geranium reduced the severity as well as the duration of acute bronchitis. That study compared Geranium against placebo The evaluation was done in 476 men and women. The symptoms of bronchitis were evaluated on a scale used to measure the severity of that disease. After seven days of treatment, the patients who received the extract had better scores on the rating scale than did the patients who took the placebo. The efficacy and safety of the Geranium Pelergonium is sufficiently documented. One of the remaining questions is, would it be of use against the flu?

Idebenone: a better Q10
Idebenone is a supplement, a molecule resembling Q10, but with better properties. A review of idebenone, and its putative role in the treatment of freidreich's ataxia, Leber hereditary optic neuropathy and other neuropathies. To prove efficacy of this supplement in these indications is quite difficult, as we will see. Partly this is due to methodological problems of how to measure the clinical effect in these diseases.

Tumour devascularisation
At the moment, no validated curative therapy is currently available for metastatic solid tumours. In western countries between 20 to 30% of the patients with colorectal cancer present themselves in stage IV. After resection of the primary tumour, often recurrence of cancer arises on the basis of micro metastases. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy can increase the life expectancy, though side effects influence strongly the quality of life. Also medical cost increases with increasing tumour stage, mainly due to adjuvant treatments and palliative care. Download the protocol

Biophoton therapy: an appraisal
Biophotons are interesting phenomena, and Dr Popp is the founder of the work on biophotons and the putative role in cellular biochemical reactions. The work of Dr Popp is hghly innovatove, but sadly enough, it has also be the base of the so called biophoton therapy. The Starlight is a machine, brought to the market, to treat a variety of diseases with biophotons, such as malaria, Lyme, multple sclerosis, schizophrenia, depression etc. Our foundation is very concerned about these unproven claims, and asked Dr Popp for his appraisal. In the following clipp you find our analysis of biophoton therapy.

Mucuna Pruriens for Parkinson's disease
mucuna_pruriens.jpeg

This is the initiation of an important Forum on the value of Mucuna Pruriens's for patients with Parkinon's disease. Patients are invited to share their experiences at the bottom of this article thus share it with other users.

Mucuna Pruriens is a plant whose components are part of at least 200 different ayurvedic preparations. In India, Mucuna Pruriens known as Kapikachhu. All parts of the plant are known for medicinal uses. There is a variety of familiar applications, ranging from potency increase, improvement of fertility in men, antidote for snake bites and, last but not least for Parkinson's disease. The plant is also known by the names Pica Pica, Kapikachu, Yerepe, Yoruba, Atmagupta, Common Cowitch, Velvet bean, Velvet bean and Cowhage. Especially for patients with Parkinson's disease is very interesting this preparation.

Mucuna pruriens preparations are already hundreds of years used in traditional ayurvedic medicine. The preparation has an obvious effect on various systems for transmission of nerve impulses (neurotransmitter systems), including the dopamine system. In 2004, the first major treatment results of a placebo-controlled clinical study published. The study was reporting the effects of 15 and 30 grams of a preparation of these seeds in patients with Parkinson's disease. The results were encouraging. We share with you our knowledge on this treatment, its efficacy and its safety.

2008: the year of meditation and mindfulness

Meditation is Good for You! That has become clear based upon many different studies. In 2008 there was an abundance of research into the value of meditation for medicine. Studies by modern imaging techniques such as MRI have shown that meditation a deep and lasting effect on us and our nervous system. There are nearly 800 publications from 2008 to about meditation in the largest medical database that we have, Pubmed. That is not nothing. More and more areas of medicine, the value of meditation for patients discovered and rediscovered. And doctors and other health workers are discovering the value of meditation as a stress-reducing technique in their turbulent medical work.

Indian Astrology of Jay Singh in Jaipur
Vedic astrology is the base of the ayurvedic medical astrology or Jyotish. One of the founding fathers of the vedic astrology was the Maharaja Jai Singh. He became intensely interested in astronomy during a tense debate in 1719 at the court of Mughal emperor Mohammed Shah. At issue was a trip on which the Emperor was planning to embark. Court astrologers could not agree on the best date. The debate encouraged Jai Singh to set astrological education as a priority in his kingdom. To that end, he constructed a series of observatories, starting with Delhi (in 1724), followed by Varanasi, Ujjain, Mathura and lastly Jaipur.

Golden Needle Therapy in Bhutan

In the traditional Bhutanese medicine the golden needle therapy is very popular. The golden needle is a nail like golden thick needle, used to treat many disorders. Many patients actively ask the traditional healer to be treated with the golden needle. The golden needle therapy is seen by many Bhutanese patients as something quite special.

IOCOB visited in 2008 a traditional healer to inquire about this method. We thougt the method might be related to Chinese medicine, were golden needles are used also. But it appeared to be quite different. Golden neelde therapy is cauterization: the  golden needle is heated and on certain points, unrelated to acupuncture points, the heated needle is applied. Not piercing through the skin, but only touching the skin. This it is not acupuncture, but cauterization. The therapy is a 2nd line therapy, if herbal remedies are not sufficient.

On the history of kings of Bhutan and Bhutanese Medicine
In november 2008 an expedition of two members of the Foundation IOCOB went to Buthan to look for the roots of Bhutanese Traditional medicine. While lunching at a small village, they noticed a triple railbow at the other side of the river, above a small temple. This rainbow emerged trice. This tempel was unkown to us and we suggested our guide to pay a visit to that temple. It appeared to be a very good move. We discovered an upto now unkown or forgotten element in Bhutanese history of its royalty and its medicine. Our guide Tshering Dhebdup assisted in translating the story the old monk told us.

LSD and medicine
LSD and medicine: first steps

At the end of 2007 a researcher from Switzerland, doctor Peter Gasser, was granted permission to deploy LSD as therapy. The title of his research:

LSD assisted psychotherapy in persons suffering from anxiety associated with advanced-stage life threatening diseases.

This is the first time since 1972 that there has been renewed scientific attention for the medical aspects of LSD. In the USA in 2008 Harvard University launched a project for patients with severe form of headache, cluster headache, using psilocybin (from the magic mushroom) or LSD. At the end of this article we provide an overview of all the LSD research in the world.

Albert Hofmann discovered LSD in 1943 and the first decades of research was in the hands of scientists and doctors. LSD helped to develop a new vision on our consciousness and on illnesses such as schizophrenia. This documentary shows how LSD before the western world criminalised it. LSD proved to have a large impact on the personal lives of those who intakes. This documentary in 2008  put on utube is a unique document.

Geniouses from the past, such as Aldeous Huxley, took LSD on their deathbed, and Dr Hofmann, the discoverer of LSD, took the last time this substance on the age of 97! (He was 102).

How to assess complementary medicine?

Quality indicator for Complementary Treatments

There are many professionals using hundreds of different non-regular or complementary treatments (alternative medicine). The treatments range from traditional non-Western medicine such as acupuncture, Ayurvedic, Tibetan medicine, Winti to a variety of diets and supplements.

Ioannides: a professor with Balls!
Professor Ioannides is epidemiologist and internist and it is his belief that science and truth are not the same. In some controversial articles he worked from that vision. There is much to so-called bias in published articles. This is not least because a lot of research done, and because the hunt is often relatively small effects. There are too few studies duplicated, because the journals have a bias and prefer to publish original documents. Publications cover moreover but a very small part of the research, and in the non-visible part have a lot of errors.

Homeopath's and fundamentalism
The homeopaths have worked well over the last few years difficult. Many aggressive stories are written that homeopathy can not work, and that only the blind, randomized study etc can give a definitive answer. That homeopathy is implausible and therefore also no longer need to be investigated, that water can not work unless placebo, which is the scams etc. Why all this sudden aggression? If something is safe, it is the homepathie, especially if it is in the hands of a doctor. In an article in June 2008 analyzes a homeopath fundamentalism around the assessment of the efficacy of the homeopatie. His conclusion:

Relaxation, the base of meditation and mindfulness

mindfulness.jpgRelaxation, the base of meditation and mindfulness. First you Relax, than you fall in meditation. You fall, as you can not steer the proces. You can only create an environment inwhich meditation occurs........

Relaxation, meditation and mindfulness
Relaxation, meditation and mindfulness: Relaxation is the base of all meditation and mindfulness sessions. Without Relaxation meditation and mindfulness will not be possible. In these 2 video's Jan Keppel Hesselink explains the relation between Relaxation, meditation and mindfulness. In the third video a nice meditation: the tree sitting meditation. A must for everyone wanting to feel relaxed, the condition for falling into meditation. Because meditation cannot be done, it happens...you can fall into it.

Meditation techniques

Buddha, the smiling monk, JMKHMeditation is a state of introspection and thoughtlessness (shunyata). You do not deal with the outside world, but the inner exploration, where emotions, thoughts and feelings occur. Through meditation silence may arise and can work from this silence. Often increased workload caused all kinds of thoughts that the body and spirit stresses These stressful thoughts often cause a negative viscious circle which is difficult to break, especially when the additional stresses for a variety of physical and emotional complaints arises. Meditation is a method to put aside all this stress and reach a different consciousness to approach the situation anew. Meditation can support the emergence of new qualities such as intuition and insight, because there are no thoughts in the way.  Some simple meditations as examples.

Meditiation in Western medicine

Mindfulness excercise IOCOB

meditatie.jpg

Mindfulness, a term that refers to totally being in the here and now. A meditation without any traditional flavours of Buddhism, Jainism, Hindiuism or Zen. Being here and now in total attention, without focus, but all including is the key of this mind state. It is as it is at this moment, without being otherwise. Accepting all that is Here and Now and watching the mind, the body and the sensations. As if being the Watcher on the Hill, as seeing it all from afar, detached yet clear and crisp! Here a series of clips from the mindgulness programme, designed by Foundation IOCOB.

Vortex of mindfulness
Vortex of mindfulness: the newest mindfulness video of IOCOB, based on the strange phenomena of the Vortex. Observing it all without any preference, observing your thoughts and associations based on these pictures. Observing as sitting on a hill, like a watcher on the hill. 3 minutes mindfulness!

Simoncini and cancer is a fungus, treating with sodium bicarbonate
Simoncini: a very special hypothesis: cancer is a fungus, treating with sodium bicarbonate is the solution. Tullio Simoncini: a doctor, oncologist, philosopher, surgeon? That you can no clarity on the internet. Well clarity about his theory: that cancer is a fungus infection with the famous fungus Candida Albicans. Who is this man? If we PubMed, the largest database of medical articles, surfing and his name and the word 'cancer' introduction, we do not find even one publication. So that concludes that he or oncosurgeon oncologist, because there would be at least one article can be found, we believe. If we use only his name, we find many articles of a T. Simoncini, but that all articles on hormones, and the author is Tommaso Simoncini. Are we dealing with a swindler, or with a little-known genious and scholar. What will it be? According to the Volkskrant he is a swindler. But in the Internet there is much criticism on the statements of that Dutch paper, the Volkskrant. Once again: what are the real facts?

Tibetan Medicine
Tibetan figurine that the Tibetan dodenboek used JMKHTibetan medicine is strongly influenced by the Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine for centuries and has grown in the rich heritage of Tibetans to a beautiful, traditional form of healing and compassion. Knowledge about the Tibetan medicine can be found in the so-called 'Ghyü Shi' (a classic textbook) written in the 12th century, compiled by the physician Yuthok Yonten Gonpo.
