Steriele techniek bij acupunctuur blijft belangrijk. Het klinkt voor de hand liggend, maar bij het inbrengen van naalden door de huid nemen acupuncturisten de wetten van de steriliteit in acht. Als dat niet gebeurd, gaat het vaak goed tot het mis gaat. Als het misgaat, gaat het goed mis. Bij een Australische acupuncturist, die hoogstwaarschijnlijk met zijn vingers aan de naald zelf gezeten heeft, zijn een aantal besmettingen in zijn patientenpopulatie opgetreden met een voor antibiotica resistente Staphylococcus aureus, een huidbacterie. Deze casus is belangrijk voor acupuncturisten. Om elke keer weer de steriliteit van de naald in de gaten te houden.
Het ging om 8 patienten die een infectie kregen. We geven de conclusie weer: This outbreak most likely resulted from a breakdown in sterile technique during percutaneous needle procedures, resulting in the transmission of MRSA from the medical practitioner to the patients. This report demonstrates the importance of surveillance and molecular typing in the identification and control of outbreaks of MRSA infection. [1] Gelukkig is dit een geisoleerd geval, maar uit dit soort gevallen moet je wel leren. De veiligheid van acupunctuur is overigens een bekend gegeven. Recent, in een review van 2008, vonden we deze conclusie: The National Institutes of Health Consensus Statement states "one of the advantages of acupuncture is that the incidence of adverse effects is substantially lower than that of many drugs or other accepted procedures for the same conditions." A review of serious adverse events by White et al found the risk of a major complication occurring to have an incidence between 1:10,000 and 1:100,000, which is considered "very low." [2]
