Over de enige studie die de groep verder beschreef, melden ze het volgende:

Thirty-four participants were randomly allocated into the acupuncture group and 12 of them recovered to normal feeding. The remaining 32 participants were allocated into the placebo group and seven of them recovered to normal feeding. The recovery rates were 35% versus 22% respectively.

Although the acupuncture group had a higher recovery rate than the control group, the difference was not statistically significant (P > 0.05).

The included trial was open label without placebo in the control group. It is difficult to tell if the observed therapeutic effect was distorted by performance bias and placebo response. While it is difficult to blind therapists in an acupuncture trial, single-blinding of the participants is possible and should be implemented. The use of sham acupuncture as placebo treatment is preferable, particularly for Chinese patients who are familiar with the general procedure of acupuncture, although the potential effect of sham acupuncture is still under debate, and the appropriate sham acu- points and techniques need to be further justified.    

Kortom, we weten het nog niet, maar het zou kunnen.... Met acupunctuur knapte 35% van de patienten op, en zonder acupunctuur 22%. Niet significant bij zo weinig patienten maar wel een duidelijke positieve trent dus. 

Beoordeling

Acupunctuur is in handen van een goed opgeleide acupuncturist veilig, daar is veel onderzoek naar gedaan. OP dit gebied, slikklachten na een beroerte zijn er een serie studies gedaan, waarvan er een die hier besproken werd, de beste is. Er is ook veel dierexperimenteel werk waaruit blijkt dat acupunctuur bij een beroerte zinvol kan zijn. Echter, twee positieve placebo-gecontroleerde studies voor deze indicatie bestaan niet. Vandaar nog geen groen stoplicht.
