Voorstanders van ozon therapie gebruiken nogal vreemde redenaties, zoals: "Ozontherapie is te beschouwen als een natuurlijke geneeswijze, aangezien er geen geneesmiddelen worden gebruikt".

Geclaimde indicaties

1. Afweerversterking en bacterie/virusdodend. Chronische infecties en chronische vermoeidheid en leverziekten.
2. Chronische pijn,  reuma en zenuwaandoeningen (neuralgieën)
3. Doorbloedingsbevorderend: etalagebenen en angina pectoris, alsmede duizelingen en het open been ten gevolge van een slechte bloedafvoer

Ozon therapie is volgens IOCOB voor deze indicaties weinig onderzocht op veiligheid en effectiviteit ^{[1] [2]}.In de grote medische databanken konden slechts enkele kleine, niet gecontroleerde onderzoeken gevonden worden.

Weinig en klein onderzoek

Op het gebied van de AIDS behandeling lijkt het geen effect te hebben, wat bleek uit fase II onderzoek. Bij doorbloedingsstoornissen van de benen bij etalagebenen gaf een recent onderzoek bij 10 patiënten positieve resultaten. Een open studie bij 4 Raynaud patienten eveneens. ^[2]

Er zijn wel biochemische aanwijzingen dat bloed met ozon behandelend vaatverwijding tot gevolg heeft.  Studies naar de effecten op ziektes die in het algemeen genoemd worden, zoals reuma en pijnsyndromen zijn er echter niet gedaan.

Gevaren van eigen bloed therapie

De therapie is echter niet zonder gevaren. Als bijwerkingen zijn o.a. beschreven hersenbeschadiging, plotselinge dood en de zogenaamde gasembolie en hepatitis B. ^{[4] [5] [6]} Ook hepatitis C is gemeld, beide aandoeningen zijn potentieel levensgevaarlijk. ^[7]

Beoordeling

Samenvattend zou ozon therapie effectief kunnen zijn bij de behandeling van etalagebenen, maar alle andere indicaties zijn onvoldoende onderzocht. ^[2]  De effecten wegen niet op tegen de eventuele gevaren, Ozon therapie krijgt een rood stoplicht voor alle genoemde indicaties, behalve voor etalagebenen, daarvoor geeft IOCOB een roodoranje stoplicht. Er zijn echter geen nieuwe studies gedaan die het effect van een kleine voorstudie konden beamen.
