Kurn, Sidney, M.D., & Sheryl Shook.Integrated Medicine for Neurologic Disorders: Herbs and Nutrientsfor Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's Disease, MultipleSclerosis, Stroke, Migraine and Seizures.Health Pr. Mar. 2008. c.254p. bibliog. index.ISBN 978-0-929173-50-4. pap. $17.95.

HEALTHKurn, a neurologist who also practices acupuncture and holistic medicine, and Shook, a physiology professor with a Ph.D. in neuroscience, here lay out a naturopathic plan aimed to complement treatments for neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and multiple sclerosis.

Each chapter-whose sections are devoted to specific problems of the disease-begins with a review of the disease process and concludes with a summary of treatment recommendations and a supplement dosage chart.

The text is heavily referenced throughout. In their epilog, the authors state their hope that the book will "help clear the way and, to some extent, empower the reader in the pursuit of his or her better health. Your health ultimately lies within you. Safe journey."

The authors' devotion to and passion for their work is evident. But with one in four adults in the United States considered functionally illiterate and considering the overall reading level, this very important text may be inaccessible to those with literacy issues. The authors would do well to publish their summaries of each disease process, with their supplement charts, in an easy-to-read compendium to this book.
