 Deze week ( 19 november 2008) meldt het US medische tijdschrift JAMA dat twee EDTA studies gestopt zijn op basis van ernstige kritiek op design en idee achter de behandelingen. De ene studie werd uitgevoerd bij autistische patienten, de andere bij patienten met hart en vaatziekten. De studiebudgetten waren enorm hoog, totaal $ 30 miljoen, en men vond de kans te groot dat dit weggegooid geld was. In de JAMA kunnen we lezen dat: The federal government and investigators have called off or suspended enrollment for 2 clinical trials testing chelation therapy as a treatment for autism or coronary artery disease. Critics charged that the studies had little scientific merit and exposed participants to unacceptable safety risks.
Het blijft natuurlijk bizar dat ethische commissies etc, etc allemaal in het begin van de studies steun gegeven hebben aan de studies. Verder: Advocates argue that the approach is beneficial for autism and coronary artery disease, despite the absence of evidence from rigorous clinical trials. With the goal of clarifying whether chelation offers benefits beyond its indications for acute heavy metal toxicity, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) decided to fund 2 randomized controlled trials: the Trial to Assess Chelation Therapy (TACT), to evaluate the approach's safety and efficacy in reducing the risk of coronary artery disease, and the Mercury Chelation to Treat Autism study. However, on September 17, the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) announced the cancellation of the autism study. A week later, investigators running TACT, sponsored by the NCCAM and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, suspended enrollment as allegations of improper consent forms were evaluated. However, the 5-year trial would continue with those already enrolled. Dus wie weet, op een keer zullen de patienten die wel al in de TACT studie ingeloten worden, worden geevalueerd. Dan zal het doek definitief vallen, is de algemene inschatting. UIteindelijk een erg onbevredigende loop van zaken. Binnen de EDTA ontwikkeling zijn enorm veel drug development fouten gemaakt, maar dat krijg je als er geen strakke organisatie achter zit. Bron: Chelation Therapy Trials Halted.
