| Acupunctuur bij bestralingsschade (xerostomie) |
 Patienten die kanker hebben worden vaak bestraald. Dan ontstaat er als bijwerking bestralingsschade. Een bepaalde en lastig te behandelen vorm van bestralingsschade is een erg droge mond, door afgenomen speekselproductie. Dit heet xerostomie. Er waren al anecdotische beschrijvingen van patienten die veel baat hadden bij acupunctuur bij deze aandoening. Acupunctuur wordt dan ook in enkele klinieken in de VS al aangeboden bij de behandeling van xerostomie na bestraling. Een nieuw onderzoek van tandartsen laat zien dat acupunctuur daadwerkelijk de speekselvloed meetbaar beinvloedt.
De tandartsen onderzochten 12 patienten met deze aandoening, die volgend op bestraling tegen kanker ontstaan was. Zowel de speekselvloed nam meetbaar toe. De klachten van de patient, namen meetbaar af. The results showed a statistically significant improvement for salivary flow rates on both objective and subjective evaluations (P<0.05). On objective evaluation there was an increase for resting salivary flow of 142.2% (mean=0.04 mL/min to 0.12 mL/min) and of 73.5% (mean=0.09 mL/min to 0.21 mL/min) for stimulated salivary flow. On subjective evaluation, visual analogue scale raised 36 points (mean=18.4 to 53.8) for sensation of more saliva production. [1] Deze resultaten werden onafhankelijk ook elders gevonden. [2] [3] Ook is er inmiddels inzicht in de processen die optreden na de acupunctuurals stimulans voor de speekselvloed in het centrale zenuwstelsel. [4] In 2008 werd door een onderzoeksgroep in de VS erop gewezen, dat acupunctuur veel meer gebruikt zou moeten worden in een palliatieve setting, juist voor dit soort problemen: Twenty-seven randomized controlled clinical trials of acupuncture were found that reported on conditions common to the hospice and palliative care setting, including dyspnea, nausea and vomiting, pain, and xerostomia, and 23 reported statistically significant results favoring acupuncture use for the conditions investigated. Acupuncture is safe and clinically cost-effective for management of common symptoms in palliative care and hospice patients. Acupuncture has potential as adjunctive care in palliative and end-of-life care, and the evidence warrants its inclusion in reimbursed palliative and end-of-life care in the United States.
