Ja, u leest de titel goed: 86% van de Hospices in de VS bieden alternatieven aan. Dat bleek uit een enquete in de staat van Washington. In een telefonisch interview, met 100% response, bleek dat vrijwel alle hospices alternatieve behandelwijzen aanboden binnen de kliniek. De onderzoekers vonden dat het gebruik er als volgt uitzag: massage (87%), muziek therapie (74%), energy healing (65%), aromatherapie (45%), guided imagery (45%), compassionate touch (42%), acupunctuur (32%), huisdier therapie (32%), meditatie (29%), kunsttherapie (22%), reflexologie (19%), and hypnotherapie (16%).
Complementair en alternatief zijn dus realiteiten in Amerikaanse hospices. Reden waarom de auteurs opriepen om een en ander ook dan daadwerkelijk te accepteren en te integreren: Complementary and alternative therapies are widely used by Washington State hospices but not covered under hospice benefits. Extensive use of these therapies seems to warrant the inclusion of complementary and alternative providers as part of hospice staff, and reimbursement schedules need to be integrated into hospice care.
