Complementaire geneeskunde binnen de Universiteiten

consortium.jpgNederland een ontwikkelingsland?? Kom nou... Echter: terwijl in Nederland academische centra besluiten geen complementaire behandelwijzen te dulden binnen haar muren, is er in de USA een consortium opgericht van universitaire medische centra, waar inmiddels al 20% van alle medische faculteiten zich bij aangesloten hebben. In het totaal 30 universiteiten. Dit consortium draagt  de veelzeggende naam: Consortium of Academic Health Centres for Integrative Medicine (CAHCIM). We hopen dat deze beweging niet aan Nederland voorbijgaat...

 

De eisen om toe te treden tot dit consortium zijn:

  1. de decaan van de medische faculteit stemt in met het opnemen van complementaire behandelvormen als een integraal onderdeel van de medische scholing voor studenten geneeskunde,
  2. het academische centrum bezit een actief programma op dit gebioed met ten minste 2 onderdelen van de 3:onderwijs, research en patientenzorg.

Vijf jaar geleden waren er 5 leden van dit consortium, en anno 2007 meer dan 30. De lijst van centra hier onder bij de bronnen is indrukwekkend.

De term integratieve geneeskunde (integrative medicine) wordt omschreven als:

"Integrative Medicine is the practice of medicine that reaffirms the importance of the relationship between practitioner and patient, focusses on the whole person, is informed by evidence, and makes use of all appropriate therapeutic approaches... to achieve optimal health and healing"

De engelsen omschrijven dit als 'Integrated medicine' en omschrijven dit als volgt:

"Integrated medicine (or integrative medicine as it is referred to in the United States) is practising medicine in a way that selectively incorporates elements of complementary and alternative medicine into comprehensive treatment plans alongside solidly orthodox methods of diagnosis and treatment. "

Het is duidelijk dat de Amerikanen daarmee de polarisatie tussen reguliere en complementaire behandelvormen achter zich gelaten hebben, alleen al door te spreken over geintegreerde geneeskunde. Een voorbeeld uit de praktijk kunnen we vinden in topziekenhuizen zoals het Sloan Ketterings Cancer Hospital in New York en de Mayo Clinic.

Een les waar we in Nederland iets van kunnen leren. Misschien een uitdaging voor vooruitstrevende universiteiten om wat buitengewone hoogleraren te benoemen in de integratieve geneeskunde? Het is de hoogste tijd om de essentie van de complementaire behandelvormen op universiteitsniveau over te dragen en dieper te doorgronden hoe complementaire artsen met hun patienten omgaan...

Er zijn maar enkele plekken in Nederland waar men pionierwerk opzet op dit gebied, o.a. bij het Slotervaartziekenhuis en in een netwerk in Nijmegen.

De citaten die IOCOB voor u verzamelde, van toonaangevende serieuze universiteiten in de USA, doen ons het schaamrood naar de kaken stijgen. We zijn wel heel erg ontwikkelingsland geworden, met dank aan de Vereniging tegen de Kwakzalverij...

We hopen dat het KNMG congres Fusion 2007 de aftrap zal worden van meer inzicht op dit gebied in Nederland.
