Er is indrukwekkend veel bewijs te vinden in de wetenschappelijke literatuur dat acupunctuur een duidelijke biologische werkzaamheid heeft. Met moderne technieken kan bijvoorbeeld aangetoond worden dat acupunctuurpunten bestaan en dat die punten een specifieke werking hebben, op delen van de hersenen. Ook zijn er positieve effecten beschreven op diverse en uiteenlopende ziektebeelden, terwijl het goed gedocumenteerd is dat acupunctuur veilig is.

Acupunctuur staat op nummer 1 wat betreft de hoeveelheid onderzoek gedaan. In het volgende tabelletje (status augustus 2004) staat het aantal artikelen dat in de grote internetbibliotheek pubmed opgenomen is op basis van de zoekwoorden die we gebruikten. De termen randomised en randomized zijn gebruikt om zowel de Engelse als de Amerikaanse literatuur te vangen.

Indicaties en Tevredenheid

In een recent onderzoek bij vele duizenden acupunctuur patiënten bleek dat de meest voorkomende klachten pijn en problemen van de ademhalingswegen zijn. En dat veel patiënten, gemeten via diverse schalen, zeer tevreden waren over de behandeling, terwijl voorgaande behandelingen vanuit het reguliere circuit tot minder tevredenheid hadden geleid.

Beoordeling

Op grond van uitvoerige studies naar effectiviteit, veiligheid en kosteneffectiviteit krijgt acupunctuur als beoordeling een groen stoplicht. Deze beoordeling geldt met namel voor de klassieke Chinese acupunctuur en de ooracupunctuur, waar het meeste onderzoek naar gedaan is. Andere vormen zijn even veilig en misschien zelfs effectiver dan de klassieke acupunctur, maar er is minder onderzoek naar gedaan.
